    3 Up 3 Down (College Week 1)

John Ewing, Director of Research and Analytics, @johnewing
    By John Ewing
A review of the week that was with a look at three college football teams that stood out for good reasons and three whose weekends did not turn out as successfully as anticipated.

    Three Up

    LSU Tigers
    2014 Record: Straight-Up 1-0, Against-the-Spread 1-0

LSU trailed Wisconsin 24-7 in the third quarter; the Tigers had just a 17 percent chance of winning the game. LSU scored 21 unanswered points to complete the comeback and extend the nation's longest regular season nonconference winning streak to 46 games.

The Tigers were able to complete the rally by containing the Badgers running game in the fourth. LSU was outgained on the ground 182-16 in the first half. The Tigers limited Wisconsin to 15 rushing yards in the decisive fourth.

    Next Up: Sam Houston State

    Trends
LSU is 2-5 against-the-spread in its last seven games.
Sam Houston State is 1-15 on the road in its last sixteen games.

    Georgia Bulldogs
    2014 Record: Straight-Up 1-0, Against-the-Spread 1-0

Todd Gurley rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns and returned a kickoff 100-yards for another score to help Georgia paste Clemson 45-21. Gurley's 293 total yards set a school record.

We gauged the impact of college football's top quarterbacks but Gurley is the highest rated non-quarterback, worth about four points per game to the Bulldogs. Gurley's 198 rushing yards was more than Clemson (102 rushing yards) gained as a team.

Next Up: A bye week, then South Carolina

    Trends
The total has gone under in 13 of Georgia's last 16 games when playing South Carolina.
In its last six games at home vs. Georgia, South Carolina is 2-4 straight-up.

    Texas A&M Aggies
    2014 Record: Straight-Up 1-0, Against-the-Spread 1-0

The Aggies routed the Gamecocks 52-28 on Thursday night. Texas A&M was an 10 point underdog but was the projected winner for more than 90 percent of the game.

Johnny who? Kenny Hill proved more than capable of replacing the Heisman winner. Hill completed 44 passes (a school record) for 511 yards (another record) and three touchdowns.

Johnny Manziel was not sore about his records being broke.

Hill's outstanding performance has launched him into the Heisman conversation. Hill, previously off the board, is now 20/1 to win the trophy. Texas A&M has also seen its National Championship odds move from 100/1 to 40/1.

    Next Up: Lamar

    Trends
Texas A&M is 1-4 against-the-spread in its last five games.
The total has gone over in 10 of Texas A&M's last 14 games.

    Three Down

    Iowa State Cyclones
    2014 Record: Straight-Up 0-1, Against-the-Spread 0-1

The Cyclones paid North Dakota State $350,000 to play them this season. The Bison, three time defending FCS National Champions, took the money and the victory. North Dakota State won convincingly 34-14; it was the school's fifth straight victory against an FBS opponent.

Iowa State has now lost back-to-back season openers to FCS programs (Northern Iowa last year). After scoring the first two touchdowns of the game, Iowa State was shutout over the final 44 minutes of the game.

    Next Up: Kansas State

    Trends
The total has gone under in 5 of KState's last 6 games on the road vs. Iowa State.
Iowa State has lost five games in a row to Kansas State.

    Ohio State Buckeyes
    2014 Record: Straight-Up 1-0, Against-the-Spread 1-0

The Buckeyes have won 25 straight regular season games but the 34-17 win over Navy did little to impress the selection committee. Ohio State needed more than 40 minutes to score its first offensive touchdown and Navy was a slight favorite to win with less than six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

We projected Ohio State would have averaged more than 44 points per game with Braxton Miller under center. With J.T. Barrett as the starting quarterback, the Buckeyes are projected to average 35 points per game, right in line with the final score of the game.

Conservative play calling and a freshmen quarterback have put a big dent in Ohio State's aspirations to play for the National Title.

    Next Up: Virginia Tech

    Trends
The total has gone over in 7 of Ohio State's last 10 games.
Virginia Tech is 2-10 against-the-spread in its last 12 games on the road.

    Boise State Broncos
    2014 Record: Straight-Up 0-1, Against-the-Spread 0-1

Ole Miss used a 28 point outburst in the fourth quarter to pull away from Boise State 35-13. The Broncos were never more than 35 percent likely to win.

Boise State, a program that used to beat the power conferences on a regular basis, has lost its last three matchups against the big boys.

If the Broncos couldn't reach the title game in the old BCS system it is doubtful that a one-loss Boise State will find its way into the new College Football Playoff. The Broncos will have to wait until next year to get their BCS-busting swagger back.

    Next Up: Colorado State

    Trends
Boise State is 1-4 against-the-spread in its last five games at home.
The total has gone over in 6 of Colorado State's last 9 games.
