    SB50 Line Moves (02/05/16)

By John Ewing Director of Research and Analytics @johnewing
How has the Vegas line moved for Super Bowl 50?

When the betting line for Super Bowl 50 was first announced the Carolina Panthers opened as clear favorites. Money has been flowing in on the NFC Champions ever since.

The Westgate had the highest line in Vegas for Carolina (-5.5) and others favored Cam Newton's team by 3.5 points, but the consensus line was Panthers -4.5 on Sunday after championship weekend.

By Monday afternoon, over 80 percent of the early wagers were on the Panthers according to Johnny Avello, oddsmaker at the Wynn. By Wednesday evening, the line had crept to Carolina -5.5.

There was no slowing down the public as action continued on to back Cam Newton and his selfie taking team. Denver became a six point underdog by Thursday.

The previous five teams that were one-sided underdogs in the playoffs went 2-3 straight-up and against-the-spread.

The line held steady through Pro Bowl weekend and the early days of Super Bowl week. Then slowly the 6's started to disappear. By Wednesday afternoon, the consensus line in Vegas was Carolina -5.5.

Of course the line movement will continue up until kickoff. Jay Kornegay, sports director of the Westgate SuperBook, says roughly 80 percent of the action will come in the final three days before the game.

Last year, $115.9 million was bet on the Super Bowl at Nevada sportsbooks. According to an estimate released last week by the American Gaming Association, Americans will bet $4.2 billion on Super Bowl 50. That would be an eight percent increase over last year.

Where will the line settle and what number will you get it at?
